Traditionally, denim jeans were associated with bikers, rebels, cowboys and blue collar workers. With the ever expanding selection of denim, the blue jean is now a staple in virtually all mens wardrobes. While denim is considered an acceptable alternative to slacks or trousers in some social situations, not all denim is created equal. The key is to choose the denim that complements your body and gives off the message you are trying to portray.
Fit
Fit is the most important aspect of finding your perfect pair of jeans. If your jeans don’t fit well, no one will be looking at any other qualities. Although there are several variations available, there are four basic fits of which you should be aware. Straight-leg jeans, which fit loosely but have some structure, are generally the most common. Loose fit describes straight-legged jeans that have a wider leg and a less tailored appearance. Boot cut jeans are similar to straight-legged, but instead of going straight down, they flare out very gradually from the knee down. Slim fit, but not quite skinny, jeans are tapered near the ankle and can range in tightness.
Finding your perfect fit means trying on each style. You may think you’re a loose fit kind of guy, but after trying on a few different styles, realize that boot cuts are for you.
Weight
Once you’ve decided on the style that suits you best, you need to find your perfect fabric weight. Some denim jeans are very lightweight, whereas others are so heavy and stiff that they can practically stand on their own. While lightweight jeans may be a little more comfortable and less expensive, they tend to rip, tear and wear easily, costing you more money in replacement pairs. Generally, it is best to find denim that falls somewhere in the middle of the spectrum.
Color
After fit and weight comes color. Denim jeans come in practically every shade, light to dark, on the blue spectrum. Some jeans are distressed, bleached or ripped. The right color depends on where you plan to wear your jeans. Dark jeans are considered more formal than light jeans. In fact, pairing a pair of dark jeans with a sports coat is often acceptable for a semi-formal night out. Lighter jeans and jeans with any distressing or ripping are for casual occasions only.
Care
Taking care of your denim jeans is just as important as choosing the right pair. If you don’t treat your jeans properly, they can shrink, rip and fade, which defeats the purpose of spending so much time finding the perfect pair in the first place.
Always wash denim jeans instead out. This will help prevent fading and distortions in color. It is not necessary to wash denim jeans after every wear. In fact, it may be more beneficial to go as long as possible without washing them. Drying jeans in a dryer can result in shrinkage, color fading and distortions in fit. It is best to lay jeans out flat to dry. It can take up to two days for your jeans to completely air-dry.
