Regardless of their specific fashion style, men seem to fall victim to the same fashion don’ts across the board. Even if you don’t put fashion high on your priority list, making an effort to avoid these fashion faux pas will help you look your best. If you’re single, it may even help get the attention of the fairer sex.
Socks and Sandals
Whoever started this trend should be locked up. Okay, maybe that is a bit harsh, but really, it is never acceptable to wear socks with sandals. If it is so chilly outside that you can’t wear sandals without the socks, wait a few more months. If you’re wearing socks to provide added comfort, just wear casual sneakers, rather than sandals.
While on the subject of sandals, wearing any sandals at all puts you on the border of a fashion do or a fashion don’t. When choosing a pair of sandals, opt for a simple, yet stylish pair made of leather. Thong sandals are acceptable, but should be reserved for very casual outings, like the beach.
Novelty Clothing
There are better ways to express your “forever young” mindset than with novelty clothing. It is never okay for an adult man to wear shirts or ties with cartoon characters on them. If you just can’t leave cartoons in your past, at least save them for your boxer shorts. That being said, wear your pants high enough so that your boxers are not exposed when you lift your arms or bend over. No one wants to see your favorite superhero plastered across your butt.
Oversized Clothing
When your clothes are too baggy, it makes you look sloppy. Some men mistakenly think that baggy clothes will cover up a pot belly, but they can actually enhance imperfections. Choose clothes that fit and flatter your body. Boot cut or slim leg jeans will do your body more justice than loose fit. A button-up shirt with a tailored blazer or sweater vest works better than a XXL tee or a hooded sweatshirt.
Wrinkles
Even the classiest outfit will look unkempt if your clothes are wrinkled. While a few wrinkles are bound to develop during the day, the crimped look is very unbecoming. If you are in such a rush in the morning that you don’t have time to iron your clothes, plan your outfits in advance and do it the night before.
Pants of the Wrong Length
Pants that are too long or too short can ruin your outfit. When pants are too long, they drag, get dirty and rip. When pants are too short, you just look ridiculous. Jeans should fall just to the bottom of your heel. Dress pants and khakis should rest on the top of your shoe heel. When you sit, your pants should expose no more than a couple inches of your sock.
While you may think you know your pant length, always try pants on before you buy them. Different brands may fit differently.
