As with any device using batteries as a power source, eventually the battery will die.  Using a few simple tips will help with improving battery life in your mobile devices, and decrease the charging frequency.

With millions of people using mobile devices 24/7, some even replacing landline phones; technology has yet to come up with a battery powerful enough to withstand the constant use.  Thinking a littler smarter with your smart phone and other mobile devices will help increase the usage time and decrease the time spent recharging.

Turning the Phone off

This sounds like a silly tip, but one that is far underutilized.  When you don’t plan on taking calls, turn the device off.  If your place of employment does not allow use of personal phones there is no need to have it on.  When in areas where there is no reception you can do the same.   Many newer devices have a power save feature where you can program the phone to turn off after so many minutes of no use, but you can do this instantly.  Smart phone users who use flight mode- remember that the phone is sucking up energy from the battery during this time so make sure to deactivate it when not in use.

Turn off the Back Light

The purpose of the backlight it to increase visibility on the phone or device’s screen.  This comes in handy when you are outside in the bright sunlight.  Many devices allow you to set the length of time the backlight stays on.  Be sure to set it for the shortest time possible, to save on battery usage. There is also an ‘auto’ mode for some backlights, this means that the device detects the amount of backlight needed to see the screen best in the current lighting conditions. This can drain battery as well as save it, it’s best to keep it as low as possible to be safe.

Turn off Vibrate

Many phones will you set to ring tones and/or the vibrate function; do you really need both?  Each time the phone vibrates, you are using power so disable it.  If you are in a place where you cannot take a call, use the no sound option and keep the phone visible so you can see a call coming in.   You can also turn down the volume on of your ring tones when in a regular setting.

Turn off your Bluetooth

Bluetooth devices are fantastic and make life great for answering and making calls, but they are one of the biggest culprits when it comes to draining your battery.  When not in use turn if off.  This also applies to Wi-Fi and GPS.

Email and Facebook Notification Settings

If you have synced your phone to email and social networks such as Facebook and Twitter, and opted for notification every 5-10 minutes, you are killing your battery life because power is used each time the sites are checked and notifications are sent.  Set it to check every hour or longer, if you cannot live without being notified or turn it off and check manually.

Just making a few simple changes will help with improving battery life of your mobile devices.  These tips can be especially useful for Smart phone users.  Try one or two out and see if it makes a difference.
